Re: GCSE Mathematics-Numeracy in Wales (WJEC),

Paul Maths Tutor.
Paul Maths Tutor.
Coronavirus Message Hi there, welcome/croeso.
Before you continue reading below, just a quick note to say that my tutoring continues to be as busy as ever during the pandemic.
Even though you may read about face-to-face tuition below, .

All my tutoring classes will remain online on Zoom for the time being so we all stay safe

For further details, please read the Local online tuition section below.
July 2020   Are you searching for the very best maths tuition.
If so, you have definitely reached the right place.
Many thanks for visiting my website which I hope will provide you with all the relevant information in your hunt for a maths tutor, .

Whether it be local tuition face-to-face or online from Wales to any location worldwide

Who am I.
Hello, my name is Paul Godding.
I am a full-time professional private maths tutor based in the south-east of Wales who delivers face-to-face tuition locally as well as online tuition to students globally.
It would be lovely to hear from you, so feel free to click  if you wish to secure maths tuition for you or your child – but, firstly, please make sure you read the rest of this page.
Alternatively, you can ring/message/WhatsApp me from anywhere in the world:    07970868121 from within Wales and the UK, or.
+447970868121 from the rest of the world.
A little bit about me and my business  Are you, or your child, struggling with maths and/or numeracy.
I am an experienced, professional and compassionate maths specialist who gets a real buzz from making maths understandable for students in an environment where they feel safe to try without fear, to make mistakes and therefore truly learn.
For many years, I have offered high-quality, home-based, one-to-one maths tuition to students who live in the coastal areas of the beautiful border county of Monmouthshire.
As you will see further down, I also take on daytime students from a variety of worldwide locations due to the marvels of online tuition, but the vast majority of my students still sit the National Numeracy Tests from Year 2 to Year 9 and the GCSE Mathematics/Mathematics-Numeracy WJEC examinations here in Wales.
I also deliver tuition for those students who decide to sit the Level 2 Certificate in Additional Mathematics, always advisable if you want to study A Level Mathematics in the future.
There are two very informative YouTube videos further down this page.
I would advise every Welsh parent/carer, of children in Years 2 to 9, to set aside just 5 minutes and watch both of them.
There are also some local parents who prefer their children to travel the short distance across the border to study in England.

These students eventually sit the GCSE Grade 9-1 AQA examinations

therefore I keep fully abreast of syllabus developments in both the Welsh & English education systems.
As a result of my international tuition I am also very familiar with 11+ examinations, as I continue to successfully tutor many children towards entrance tests, thus enabling them to access their chosen independent school in Britain.
My vision  Although I’ve helped students achieve examination success for many years, my main aim as a mathematics educator is to inspire children to enjoy the subject and give them added confidence, particularly when dealing with arithmetic.
I am a unique tutor in this respect as this can be achieved by utilising an excellent range of traditional and paper-based board games & puzzles, many of which are my own designs.
If you are a parent who is looking for that something different to ignite a spark in your child’s eyes, and gain a love for maths that will last a lifetime, please get in touch.

Local online tuition  Since 2017

I have offered online tuition via Zoom for international students.
They love this ever-growing medium of learning and, prior to tuition, receive details of how to access this online programme so lessons can begin at an arranged day and time.
As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, all my local students are now also being tutored online.
For my online classes, I utilise question sheets from a wide range of sources in PDF format.
An interactive whiteboard is also available on screen, similar to the ones found in the school classroom.
Both parties can annotate/write/highlight on the screen at the same time during our online sessions.
The work for every lesson is prepared from scratch according to the weaknesses identified from an initial assessment.
Where applicable, I love to incorporate games or activities to make lessons fun and interactive, including number puzzles from my own daily number website,.
Online tuition worldwide  I am now very experienced at online tuition, with my long-term online students currently based in various towns & cities throughout Asia, but my method of tutoring can work with home-educated children in Britain and North America.
As I constantly receive visitors to our website from across the Atlantic, I could offer a weekly class at the end of the school day if based in North America, although it would be late-night here in Britain.
Tuition sessions with children from Australia and New Zealand is also possible due to the time difference coinciding with my daytime availability.
I f you have only ever considered a maths tutor in your locality, wherever you are based, have a re-think and please get in touch.
My teaching experience & qualifications   Having taught maths to all ages and abilities for 30+ years (from young children to adults returning to college).

I now specialise in tutoring students up to GCSE-standard

although a few of my students have been on degree courses which contain a maths/statistics element or module.
Since graduating in the 1980’s, I obtained a Certificate of Education from Cardiff University and later achieved a Master of Science degree (MSc) in Education Management in the mid-1990’s; my dissertation focusing on the level of basic skills training employees receive within companies in the south-east of Wales.
Many years on and the skills shortage problem seems even more concerning.
On a consultancy basis, I sometimes visit schools and universities throughout the UK to deliver classroom-based maths workshops, therefore my DBS documentation is up-to-date and available to view if necessary.
Why extra tuition.
As well as the obvious benefits in their child’s maths confidence and knowledge, many parents have seen that private one-to-one tuition can also have a positive effect on other subjects and help them to become more disciplined towards their studies in general.
Everyone can be good at maths, but some just need that gentle boost or support to master arithmetical techniques.
If important foundations are missed, this can lead to problems with more advanced work at a later date.
I am a firm believer that students should know the basics of arithmetic by answering addition and multiplication questions as quickly as if they were asked their own name.
Learning these basic skills is essential, but unfortunately missing from many students’ knowledge base.
Much of my time is therefore spent revisiting topics such as the four operations and fractions, but I always ensure more advanced work is covered so students can get to grips with current areas of study in school.
Practising the basic skills  Please feel free to get in touch should you or your child need any help or support with the fundamentals, even for topics you may think are too basic.
This can often make all the difference and why I always encourage students to sharpen their number skills.
One way of doing this is to attempt the daily number puzzles posted at this website, of  which I  am the proud author.
Regular visits have proved vital for my students.
As author, I am very proud we are officially the World’s #1 Daily Number Puzzle Website on the top search engines, and extremely  flattered that 7puzzleblog.com is accessed by students, teachers, parents and many others from over 170 nations worldwide.
School teachers throughout the world already use my popular challenges as maths starters and a revision resource; why not join them.
Frequency of lessons  This depends on each student’s needs and goals but most are scheduled for one class per week, although it is becoming more common to see parents booking fortnightly classes instead.   There may be a number of reasons behind this, from busy children who are members of multiple clubs to families with financial constraints.
But one thing I would strongly recommend is that final-year GCSE students attend on a weekly basis.
Tremendous strides can be made with regular lessons, allowing me to plan a revision timetable throughout the year and constantly evaluate progress as we near the final examinations.
Parental support & homework  As a parent, you may be worried that your child’s maths skills or motivation are not at a level you’d expect.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch for advice.
Parental involvement is key; positive input from family can be invaluable.
When setting homework, which is done at the end of each lesson, I expect it to be completed by the next session.
With younger students, I recommend that parents help with homework.
On occasions, my homework will also contain that particular day’s challenges from.
I always make time at the end of each class for short, informal feedback so parents are aware of their child’s progress.
Qualities needed to be a successful student  With the way the new syllabuses are being examined, students now require far better number and problem-solving skills to handle the different types of questions asked.
A  considerable amount of time is therefore spent in my class discussing exam and revision techniques; simple things like reading a question once more even after answering it and not being distracted by others.
Some students can fail to achieve their deserved result simply by being disorganised.
Other important aspects of learning I try and instil into my students during classes include perseverance, resilience and concentration, not forgetting having a positive attitude, good listening skills and a level of neatness; showing pride in their work.
Tutoring is a two-way process.
As well as my input, the student obviously needs to put in some hard work, but my personal view is that the most important attribute for any student to have is a positive attitude towards learning.
Without this, they may well not reach their potential.
Again, the completion of homework is vital and tells me everything about a student.
Various levels of tuition covered  Here is an example of the different types of tutoring I’ve undertaken in recent years:    GCSE Mathematics in Wales (WJEC) & England (AQA),.
GCSE Mathematics-Numeracy in Wales (WJEC),.

Level 2 Certificate in Additional Mathematics (WJEC),

Application of Number for college students,.

International GCSE (Edexcel) for students at independent schools,

11+ entrance tests for independent and grammar schools,.

Preparation for National Numeracy Tests in Wales for Years 2 to 9,

Confidence-building for primary school children,.
Home-educated children and study groups,.

QTS Professional Skills Test in Numeracy,

Entrance tests into British & American colleges,.
Non-mathematicians studying degree courses,.

Maths & Numeracy support for Adult Learners,

Online maths tuition worldwide for students following a variety of courses.
National Numeracy Tests in Wales  If you are the parent/carer of a child in Years 2 to 9 and wish to gather further information about these tests and what the results mean, please feel free to watch this Welsh Government video from a few years ago:   I have access to all the past papers since their inception in 2013 and can fully prepare your child for the numerical part of these annual tests.
Since 2019, the tests have started to be carried out online instead of the traditional method on paper we are all familiar with.
It is being phased in year-by-year, as shown below, and described fully on the following video:   2018/19.
Numeracy (Procedural).
2019/20.
Reading.
2020/21.
Numeracy (Reasoning).
If you still have any queries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s school.
Sixth Form, College & University students  I have recently tutored a number of post-16 students who follow non-mathematical courses and need assistance with a maths aspect of their course, .

Or may even be resitting GCSE Maths to improve their grade

Recent college students have been sitting A Levels or courses in engineering, fashion and nursing while my undergraduates have attended universities in Cardiff, Swansea and London, studying for a variety of degrees such as Optometry, Motorsport Engineering and Geology.
These older learners usually arrange lessons for the daytime as their timetable is lighter than the younger ones in full-time education.
I’m looking to expand this service so university students in the Cardiff and Newport areas can gather in small groups during term-time to receive support informally in coffee shops or other similar environments, such as local libraries, but only if we are able to socially-distance in doing so.
I do enforce a strict rule when tutoring groups by working with a maximum of three students at a time.
My fee for each 50-minute session depends on whether I’m working with an individual, a pair of students or a group of three.
Please get in touch for further details.
Adult learners   As well as school children of all ages, I have also worked with young adults who need to pass the Numeracy aspect of the Professional Skills Test in order to gain Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) status.
Since 2013, universities in England will not accept students onto initial teacher training courses unless they have successfully manoeuvred both Literacy and Numeracy tests.
There are also many adults who need to improve their numeracy skills at their workplace.
With more and more employers requiring transferable skills for multi-tasking activities, it is essential they have a good grounding of arithmetical and logical skills.
References  Should you wish to receive feedback about my work, I can put you in touch with parents of recent students.
They will confirm the quality of tuition, subject knowledge, improved results/confidence and my positive interaction with students.
Cancellations  I always appreciate a call or message as soon as you realise your child will be unable to make a class, whether it be due to illness or any other issue.
There is no cancellation fee as it can work both ways, but the earlier I know a child cannot attend a lesson, the better the chance I have of filling that slot from my reserve list.
Booking tuition at the appropriate time  Some parents try and ‘panic-book’ my services with exams or tests on the horizon.
I strongly encourage parents to arrange tuition before your child starts an academic year so I can plan my own timetable for them; combining a coverage of basic arithmetical skills, current areas of study and, of course, past paper practice and examination technique.
As I am always fully booked by the time each academic year begins, your child would then have to join my reserve list and only have the odd lesson when a cancellation arises.
Class length  Since 2018, I have been delivering 50-minute face-to-face classes, meaning the students are less tired than during previous hourly sessions and we definitely get more work done.
Could it be psychological.
There are additional, informal 5-minute parent consultations at the end of each lesson, if required.
Regular feedback is vital for all parties concerned.
Since March 2020, I have only tutored online, with each session lasting for one hour.
T uition rate  My current rate for each one-to-one class is £32.
The plan was to increase my rate  for both face-to-face and online tuition via Zoom from September 2020, but due to the Coronavirus crisis my fee will stay fixed at £32 until September 2021 at the earliest, and only online tuition will be available.
Yes, there may be cheaper tutors out there, but the fee reflects my extensive experience and quality of service as well as your child having access to some fantastic resources.
